Board approves five Government Study Committee warrant articles for town meeting

Halifax Board of Selectmen unanimously approves five governance-reform articles for 2026 annual meeting. Chair Thomas Pratt outlined five proposed changes: converting the Town Clerk, Treasurer/Collector, and Highway Surveyor from elected to appointed positions; renaming the Board of Selectmen to Selectboard; and making the Water Commission appointed through home rule petition, with the Board serving as appointing authority. In other action, the board unanimously approved ambulance abatements of $141,212.61 for January 2026 and granted two requests for use of the Town Green: Boy Scout Troop 39 for an April 11 bottle and can drive, and Halifax Pride for a June 13 event.
Town Administrator Steven Solbo reported a budget deficit of $1.1 to $1.2 million with limited remaining cost-reduction options.
