Finance Committee Hears of Significant Budget Pressures and Town Deficit

HALIFAX — Finance Committee Examines Budget Crisis as Town Faces $1.1 Million to $1.4 Million Deficit. Town Administrator Steven Solbo reported the projected deficit and said his recommended budget will be submitted by March 6 for Finance Committee and Board of Selectmen review. Library Director Dylan Benoit discussed budget increases for state certification and electricity, while Highway Superintendent Steve Hayward reported stormwater funding must increase to $144,000 (from $100,000 budgeted), the snow-and-ice budget is running $97,000 over, and requested $116,000 for a new pickup truck.
The Board of Selectmen voted to add five charter review articles to the warrant, including proposals to change the Town Clerk, Treasurer/Collector, Highway Surveyor, and Water Commission from elected to appointed positions.
