Finance, Selectmen review budget cuts, weigh override split
Finance Committee · Meeting of March 9, 2026
HALIFAX — Finance Committee and Board of Selectmen review budget requiring override and deep cuts. Town Administrator Steven Solbo presented a FY 27 budget facing significant reductions across schools, public safety, and services if voters reject an override. An $800,000 school cut would eliminate 12 teachers and increase classroom sizes to 40 students.
Police Chief Chaves proposed $143,000 in cuts. Fire Chief Mike Witham outlined $140,000 in cuts limiting operations to one vehicle at a time, requiring increased reliance on mutual aid and potentially lengthening response times. The Board deferred its override vote to March 10.
