Council on Aging · Meeting of October 20, 2026

HALIFAX — The Halifax Council on Aging voted unanimously to seat Barbara Nichols on its advisory board, correcting an earlier procedural vote taken while she was in the room. Director Darlene Regan told the board that staffing shortages tied to a $7,000 van-driver budget line have forced the department to refuse more than "35 calls" for medical transportation since July despite the town's service contract with GATRA, with one board member calling the refusals a violation of that contract. Regan also reported Halifax expects $50,000 in earmarked fiscal 2027 state funding to restore eliminated staff positions and support programming, and said two formerly full-time assistant jobs have been reclassified as part-time union roles paying roughly $24,000 and $23,000 a year, a change she is contesting with the town pending labor-relations guidance.

Former chair Jean Gallant resigned by email; Regan's written reply called herself "heartbroken by your decision."
