Halifax Finance Committee Eyes Free Cash Backup as Override Vote Nears
HALIFAX -- May 4, 2026, Halifax Finance Committee debates free cash versus operating override ahead of annual town meeting. Meeting Monday with Chair Jim Walters and six other members present in-person or remotely, the committee reviewed a supplemental budget document showing available free cash of $1,390,489 and a school budget total of $8,157,387 for town meeting. Resident Gordon Anders, 244 Elm Street, argued that correcting a school committee vote, updating the Silver Lake Regional assessment, drawing $175,000 from stabilization, and applying the House cherry-sheet Chapter 70 number could eliminate the override need on the school side, but member Jonathan Seeley warned against using free cash a second consecutive year: "Every time we kick this can down the road, it's getting bigger and bigger." Two line items changed since the Finance Committee's final approval, the waste-lined contract fell from $421,000 to $397,175 after a zero-percent increase was negotiated, and dispatch services rose $5,000 to $205,000. The committee will meet again Monday, May 11, at 5:30 p.m. at Halifax Elementary School to vote on remaining warrant articles before town meeting.
