Finance Committee · Meeting of June 29, 2026

Halifax Finance Committee reviews year-end budget gaps and eyes special town meeting warrant for dormant funds. Meeting virtually on June 29, the committee worked through fiscal year 2026 budget discrepancies in the Labor Council legal, IT equipment, and Silver Lake assessment accounts, with Town Accountant Lindsay confirming all three remained positive overall despite misallocated line items she attributed to manual data-entry errors. Chair Jim estimated between $50,000 and $75,000 in unspent town meeting appropriations more than three years old, including a roughly $15,000 roof line, and urged the committee to pursue a special town meeting warrant article to return those funds to the general fund: "I think we need to collapse those and pull those back in, given our current financial situation." The town also faces a snow and ice deficit of approximately $148,000 to $149,000, with state reimbursement of roughly $138,000 expected but unlikely to arrive before the July 15 fiscal close.

The Board of Selectmen is set to close the special town meeting warrant on July 7, leaving a narrow window for Finance Committee action; the committee's next in-person meeting is scheduled for July 13 at Town Hall.
