Library board votes 2026 holiday hours
Library · Meeting of October 5, 2026
Halifax library trustees set 2026 holiday hours and opened budget talks for fiscal 2027. Library Director Dylan told trustees the town now requires a minimum $375,111 appropriation to keep state certification, with a working draft request near $375,500 due to the town October 22. Dylan said a 10 percent cut would hit library staff hardest, turning a nominal $37,000 reduction into roughly $45,000 once the state's required 90 percent materials spending is backfilled, while estimating the library delivered $1,487,000 in taxpayer "return on investment" this past year, up from about $700,000.
Trustees voted unanimously to set unpaid half-day hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on November 25, a half day on Christmas Eve, and closures on the Saturdays after Christmas and New Year's. Staff member Megan is drafting a three-page AI use policy, saying it's "a good practice to use it as a tool and not as a research friend." Director Dylan also flagged a batch of outdated policies for repeal, including a photography ban Dylan said "I don't even think we can legally have."
