Finance Committee · Meeting of July 29, 2026
Halifax's Finance Committee opposed three of six Special Town Meeting warrant articles hours before voters took them up July 29. Members voted not to recommend a $585,372 supplemental budget that included $200,000 for two to two and a half new elementary school teaching positions, citing the district's unspent prior-year budget authority and a separate $200,000 turnback from Silver Lake Regional School District. "The elementary school is asking for $200,000 more dollars for what?" asked member Frank Johnston.
The panel also declined to recommend a $200,000 free cash article for union contract settlements, citing unverified GATRA contract documentation. It did recommend two PFAS litigation settlement articles, including a $300,000 water-mitigation appropriation, on condition the account be named and Select Board approval be restored over the town's water commissioners' spending.
