Halifax Finance Committee rejects $100,000 fire department transfer, 2-3

Finance Committee · Meeting of July 28, 2026

Halifax Finance Committee rejects fire department's $100,000 reserve fund request, 2-3. Chair James Walters and member Frank Johnston voted yes; Vice Chair Cheryll Zarrella-Burke, Clerk Michael Bennett and member Rodney Hemingway voted no, citing timing so soon after May's town meeting. The fire chief's letter, read into the record, said staffing remains below National Fire Protection Association standards and cited a firefighter out on medical leave.

Resident Gordon Andrews argued the transfer would circumvent town meeting's earlier refusal to fund the amount, saying "that's the appropriating body for the town." A separate $100,000 police department reserve request, tied to an officer's resignation, was held without a vote after Police Chief Ted Benner disclosed a second officer had also resigned, with members asking for a resubmission detailing overtime costs.
