HALIFAX -- June 1, 2026, Halifax Finance Committee approves $19,000 reserve transfer and reorganizes leadership after chaotic spring Town Meeting. The committee voted 6-0 Monday to transfer $19,000 from the Reserve Fund to cover an emergency sewer line failure at the town water department building, where administrative staff were sent home until repairs were completed. Chair Jim Walters was re-elected 5-0, Frank Johnston was named vice chair replacing the previous holder, and Mike Bennett was retained as clerk. The meeting's sharpest exchange came during a lengthy discussion prompted by written questions from resident Mary Gravenise, who asked why no one pressed the school superintendent to explain budget numbers that changed three times, the last revision arriving the evening of Town Meeting, and why a $600,000-plus discrepancy between Silver Lake Regional and Halifax Elementary budget figures, discovered the Friday before the vote, was never publicly clarified. "If Dr. Jill was discussing that with Gordon Andrews in April, she sure as heck wasn't discussing it with the Finance Committee in April or May," said the member identified as Brian. The committee also learned that Halifax school financial records before FY26 are digitally inaccessible because staff never built a technical crosswalk when a new account ledger was created, a gap confirmed through the Collins Center.
