Halifax joint Finance Committee and Board of Selectmen meeting reveals structural budget crisis requiring a $1.5 million override. Town Administrator Steven Solbo presented a level-funded FY27 budget on March 9 requiring approximately $1.35 million in cuts across departments, telling the joint body that Halifax's tax levy has grown only 50 percent over 20 years while inflation rose roughly 67 percent, a gap now forcing cuts the town can no longer defer. Police Chief Chaves outlined $153,000 in reductions including elimination of one full-time officer and the school resource officer position; Fire Chief Mike Witham said $140,000 to $150,000 in cuts would leave shifts at two personnel, meaning only one apparatus, fire truck or ambulance, could respond at a time.
School Committee Chair Lauren Laws warned that an $800,000 school cut could eliminate 12 teachers and push sixth-grade class sizes to 40 students, while noting Halifax has forfeited roughly $400,000 in grants due to MBTA noncompliance. The Board of Selectmen deferred its override ballot vote to a separately posted meeting, with a $1.5 million single-question override, costing the average homeowner approximately $532 annually, the figure on the table.
