Halifax Select Board Places $1.5 Million Tax Override on Spring Ballot

Halifax places a $1.5 million Proposition 2½ override question on the spring ballot. The Select Board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve all four ballot questions for the annual election, including the override — which would allow the town to assess $1.5 million in additional real estate and personal property taxes beginning July 1, 2026 — and three governance reform questions that would convert the town clerk, treasurer-collector, and highway superintendent from elected to appointed positions. Chair Jonathan Seeley and Selectman Thomas Pratt debated splitting the override into separate public-safety and school buckets before Town Administrator Stephen Solbo noted the ballot language carries no allocation requirements, leaving the board flexibility until the April warrant deadline.

The board tied the override to Halifax's decision last December to forgo more than $400,000 in MBTA Communities Act grants, with Seeley saying, "I hope the town is ready" to follow through on pledges made at a packed December town hall.
